It is the deal that happened 13 months ago. The Old Trafford based outfit signed Chile winger Alexis Sanchez, 29-year-old, on a four-and-a-half year deal worth £14m a year after tax. The player almost joined Manchester City in the 2018 summer transfer window, but the deal never materialized as City didn’t want to dampen the spirit of the team by making Sanchez the best-paid player in the Premier League.
In the same deal, the Armenian forward, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, moved to Emirates Stadium after adding 13 goals to his tally in 63 games for Manchester United.
Following the Alexis’ move to Old Trafford, much was expected from the interesting winger. However, the things didn’t shape out according to the plan and the former Udinese attacker struggled and scored a paltry two goals and recorded three assists in the 15 games across all the competitions in 2018.
The 2019 season started for Manchester United star on a positive note. He showed the glimpses of his return in the pre-season fixtures and friendly games. However, he couldn’t convert the bright start to the season into his success. Once again, he failed to live up to the expectations in the Premier League 2019.
Few blamed the failure of Sanchez to Mourinho’s negative tactics and few to his frequent injuries and lack of game time. However, the Chilean forward’s failure can be attributed to all of those mentioned.
In the final months of Jose Mourinho’s stint at Old Trafford, the stars of the club, Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez fell out of favour. Moreover, to make things worse, Machester United dropped to the sixth position in the Premier League table.
The 18th of December 2018: Jose Mourinho was sacked and succeeded by the caretaker manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the reports of dressing-room unrest at United.
The new caretaker manager arrived at Old Trafford with a bag of fresh ideas. The positivity brought the invaluable option to change the strategy according to the players he has. All the players in the team look like they have gotten fresh breathe of air. Presently, even Alexis Sanchez looks menacing again!
In a recent interview after PSG fixture, Ole insisted that “Alexis Sanchez still has many years left at the highest level and just needs goals to increase his confidence”Before the UEFA Champions League fixture, Alexis Sanchez scored two goals against his former club, Arsenal at Emirates Stadium.
Sanchez is training hard to get that success. He wants to prove himself and in an interview, he admitted that “he is worried having failed to bring more joy to the Premier League club and their fans.”“I would like to have brought more joy to the club. Yes, it worries me because I believe in my abilities as a player, I want to show it.”
Alexis Sanchez is a kind of a player with the restless reliability which resembles one of the most excellent attackers of the Manchester United, Carlos Tevez. However, Sanchez might not be as feisty as Tevez, but he is relentless like Tevez who can offer an extra edge to the attacking might of Red Devils.
Things are shaping out good for Manchester United after 18th December. They have won 10 out of 12 games under Ole. They are attacking as they did under Sir Alex. With Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial out for two-three weeks due to injury, the time has come for Sanchez to show up his uncanny abilities which he used to dish out the goals at Udinese, Barcelona, and Arsenal.
With those two goals against Arsenal in the FA Cup and recent performance against Chelsea in the same competition has increased the heartbeats of Manchester United fans and let us expect that Sanchez’s “Apna time Aayega” and perform brilliantly for the Red Devils and do the justice to the No.7 jersey he is wearing.
