Match No. 32 – Poland (0) vs Colombia (3)
Stadium – Kazan Arena
A very ordinary first half except for the goal. The second half wasn’t a great improvement either. Poland were never out of the game. The game was even in terms of possession with Colombia edging it 55-45. Colombia kept it clean though by escaping the game with 0 bookings. The goal tally was where Colombia successfully came on top. They were clinical in the final third unlike Poland. Poland were also thwarted by the brilliant Ospina. Deserved win for Colombia.
2’: First action is a corner for Poland but it is a harmless one. Another one in quick succession for them, but this time it is a short one. A similar result though as it goes out for a throw.
5’: First effort on target of the game is by Lewandowski whose header is straight at Ospina.
28’: Colombia growing into the game. A cross for Falcao is cleared by Colombia.
31’: A forced sub for Colombia. Abel Aguilar goes off on a stretcher, Uribe comes on. Never a pretty sight, that.
36’: Cuadrado with a threatening run from the right. He goes past 2 Polish defenders and shoots. Szczesny saves.
40’: GOAL! Mina breaks the deadlock. Colombia lead. J. Rodriguez with the chip into the Poland box and Mina rises highest.
48’: A header from Lewandowski after a long throw-in. Bereszynski won that throw in after his cross was cleared out.
56’: Quintero speeding in with a counter attack for Colombia. He manages to get a corner. But it is again wasteful. A substitution follows as Kownacki is replaced by Gorsicki for Poland.
58’: Lewandowski! That was a chance. The striker took the long pass beautifully but his shot was blocked bravely by the on rushing Ospina. He has taken a hit and is down with some considerable pain.
61’: First booking of the game goes to Jan Bednark of Poland.
70’: GOAL! Colombia double their lead. Falcao nets it. Quintero crosses it in low and sharp. Striker controls it well and shoots it in.
72’: Substitution for each side. Bereszynski is replaced by Terodorczyk for Poland and Lerma comes on for Quintero for Colombia.
75’: GOAL! There is the goal that settles all the Colombian nerves. Cuadrado gets the third one. The winger latches onto a pass from the halfline by James Rodriguez and hits it past the keeper.
78’: Goal scorer Falcao makes way for Bacca.
80’: Final sub for Poland. Pazdan goes off for Poland. Glik comes on.
88’: Save by Ospina. Another effort from Lewandowski who has been trying his hardest to get on the scoresheet here. The striker sees an opportunity at the edge of the box. Ospina palms it over.
Robert Lewandowski(***): Didn’t do anything wrong. The opponent keeper was up to the task whenever he was called into action by the striker. Full marks for Lewa for trying. Nothing came of it though.
James Rodriguez (***): If not with a goal, he was there to make a difference with an assist. He was a constant threat to the Polish defense and he was able to pick the lock for the opening goal.
Outstanding Player: Aside from the three goalscorers and a brilliant defensive unit, Quintero was the player that shone most. His two brilliant assists were reminiscent of an old fashioned winger.
Viewer Rating: **
The game started quietly and in the favour of Poland. But Colombia grew into it as the game went on. A good watch for any neutral but not for a Lewandowski fan.
Match Implication: Win for Colombia means their hopes of qualification are still alive. The result also extinguishes any hopes for Poland to qualify.
