Match No.35 : Portugal (1) vs Iran (1)
Stadium : Mordovia Arena
The first half had little excitement but the half ended on a high for Portugal with Quaresma’s finish. Second half also saw attacks from both sides but neither side threatened a lot. Despite the 14 attempts by Portugal, only 4 were on target. Their 74% possession counted for nothing in the end.
3’: Ronaldo quickly in on the act. His low shot goes into the hands of the Iran keeper.
7’: Iran’s first attack of the game. Taremi’s shot is wide of the target.
15’: Portugal with two corners in quick succession. Both of them are wasteful.
20’: Long ball into the box from Iran but Portugal deal with it easily.
33’: Guerrero in the book for a foul on Jahanbakhsh. From the resulting free kick Ezatolahi heads it straight to Patricio.
40’: A shot from way out from Ron. Beiranvand collects it easily.
45’: GOAL! Quaresma has broken the deadlock on the stroke of half time. Takes the pass from Adrien Silva in his stride and hits it with his right.
50’: Penalty for Portugal! VAR comes into play as Ronaldo has a coming together with the defender. SAVED! Iran keeper dives to his left to deny Ronaldo. Portugal still lead by 1.
56’: Substitution for Iran, Mohammadi on for Haji Safi.
64’: Booking for the goal scorer, Quaresma.
70’: He then makes way for Bernardo Silva.
83’: Ronaldo loses his cool and is booked for a push on Pouraliganji.
90’ + 3: PENALTY for Iran! And SCORED! GOAL! Iran have scored in stoppage time with at most 2 minutes to go. What a raid.
Not his greatest game. Was passive except for a few shots from target. Had the chance to score from the spot after he won the penalty but failed to do so. Remarkable, had only two touches in the opponent’s box.
Rarely got a chance to make an impact as Portugal dominated possession. But ended the game with few mistakes.
Despite his side failed to get all three points, Pepe was a solid rock in the back for Portugal. He was there to win the ball on most occasions and hence deny Iran any real opportunity.
A disappointing game to be honest. Neither side looked to pose a great threat. Good late drama in either half meant that the game saw a few goals.
A draw was going to be enough to guarantee qualification for the European side and that is exactly what happened. Portugal finish runners-up in the group and will be facing Uruguay in Knockout round.
