This was a match between one of the Europe’s strongest teams against the underdogs from South America. But what an upset it turned out to be. After the Argentina vs Iceland game, all eyes were on Germany to see if they falter. And they did. Germany dominated with 26 shots compared to Mexico. Germany were all about attack. That is how they were expected to set up, and they did. Mexico were ready to soak the pressure and hit them on the counter. Even with 9 shots on target, the Germans failed to make any of them count. A goal 10 minutes from half time condemned Germany to a shock defeat.
4’: Fast start from both the sides. End to end stuff as Boateng blocks an effort from Lozano. At the other end right away we go, with TIm Werner dragging it wide.
13’: Herrara from distance can’t get it past Neuer.
16’: Almost an own goal. Salcedo almost deflects a cross from Kimmich into his own net.
24’: Kroos tries from distance but saved by the keeper. Hernandez then tries a shot at the other end which is blocked.
35’: GOAL! Brilliant bit of play at the halfway line by Chicharito as he skips past Hummels and then finds himself one defender away from goal. But he unselfishly slips one through to Lozano who drags it on his right and finishes it off.
40’: Lozano makes a silly foul 25 yards from goal. Kroos hits it sweetly. But Ochoa is equal to it. Lozano gets away with one. Moreno is punished with a yellow for time wasting.
56’: Werner asks for a foul on the edge of the area. Nothing is given. Draxler wins a corner for his side but Ochoa saves it easily.
60’: Low grows restless as he throws on Reus for Khedira. An offensive move in times of need.
65’: A throwback to the CL finals as Kimmich attempts as his bicycle goes over harmlessly.
68’: Lozano goes off with a standing ovation. What a day for him! In his place comes Jiminez.
72’: A game full of drama continues it’s theme. As Hernandez is bearing down on goal he goes down near the edge of box. Nothing is given by the referee.
74’: Marquez comes on for a record fifth appearance in the world cup. Guardado makes way.
80’: Germany trying everything they can. Plattenhardt is replaced by Mario Gomez.
85’: Hummels the latest to go into the book for a late tackle on Alvarez.
87’: Low makes his last move as he throws on Brandt for Werner.
89’: Herrera is booked for Mexico. But not before Ochoa is called into action by Mario Gomez. Brandt fires in from 25 yards. But it only skims the outside of the post.
Toni Kroos(***): Was Germany’s standout player without doubt. He almost scored an equaliazer with a curling effort that crept just wide.
Javier Hernandez(**): Wasn’t his best game. But it all worked out well for his team. He had the chance to make a goal for his team in the second half, but he couldn’t make the pass.

Ochoa deserved all the credit for keeping Mexico in the game. Even in an all round team effort, he deserves special credit for earning a clean sheet.

Isn’t this the kind of upset everyone wants? German fans were left disappointed but it was a treat for the neutrals. If the Mexicans hadn’t wasted so many chances, it could have been a goal fest.
Here’s a golden opportunity for Mexico to end the group stage top of the lot. No doubt that Germany will qualify but Mexico will be licking their lips right now at this wonderful prospect.
