Match Story:

Sweden VS Korea Republic, first time in the history of world cup we watched this two-team fighting. Sweden and world surely missed the great Ibrahimovic and his energy. This game was very crucial for both Sweden and Korea for their further chances in this world cup. Both the teams played for winning, but ultimately only Sweden got the 3 points and went to be the top of Group F.

In the first 15 minute of play, Korea was dominating, and ball was almost in the Swedish territory. Though Sweden had the sluggish start but after that they controlled the entire match. It was a low goal scoring match due to some brilliant goalkeeping by Jo Hyeonwoo. You cannot keep Kim Younggwon off, he was always there to save them otherwise it could have more than 1 goal loss for Korea.

Again, after the HT Korean again showed their energy and made some chances but they missed their chances every time. Both the team were dying for the goal and so the spectators, finally thanks to the technology(VAR). Though referee denied but VAR showed that there was the certain foul hence penalty, which was beautifully converted by Swedish captain.

After the goal Swedish were full of control and was in attacking mode. They didn’t give any chance to the Korean after the much-needed goal although there was some good attempts by the Korean at the end.

Time Line:

02” – Lee Young commited a foul, very early in the match.

13” – Yellow card!! After too many fouls, referee said he had seen enough and thus came first yellow card of the game to Kim Shinwook. First half was full of fouls from both the team.

25” – Great Stop!! Brilliant work by Jo Hyeonwoo. Marcus berg’s close range shot but he did everything to stop and Koreans hope still alive.

28” – Substitution!! First substitution of the game had to take him off, early change left back Kim Minwoo replacing the injured Park Jooho.

HT – Sweden (0) – Korea (0)

At HT ball possession:

55” – Yellow card!! H C Hwang booked by the referee, second yellow card of the match

61” – Yellow card!! Classeon is booked by the referee, lots of fouls and cards today.

65” – Goal!! Surely this was the need of this game VAR, if you have the technology why shouldn’t use it. Captain A Granquist scores for Sweden on a penalty that was awarded by the VAR technology.

Star Players:

Emil Forsberg (**): Swedish player of the year 2014, 2016 & 2017. Sweden expected a lot from this man, but he didn’t score the goal but shown his skill. Unfortunately, couldn’t score in the game but was a good game for him, surely we will see lot more from him in the upcoming outings.

Andre Granqvist (***): Captain lead from the front, lead by the example. Someone had to take the penalty and he made the right decision, took all the responsibility and clinched the game for his team. This is what his team need from him.

KI Sung Young (*): He is the captain of the team, accurate passing is one of the attributes of this player. More than 100 games for Swansea city, but in this game he could not show his class.

Team Performance:

They have sluggish start, but they were always in the game due to bad finishing by Korean. But after 20 min of the game they showed their class and repo, they were very accurate with their long ball skill. The only thing is they couldn’t cross Korean GK until the beautiful penalty taken by their captain. After the goal they were furious and wanted some more but could not achieve more than 1. If you play defensive after the first goal, you always have a chance to finish as draw or might lose the game, so it was a very good strategy to attack.

Showed their Energy till the game last but couldn’t make their chances. They are a good team as a unit and its hard to defeat them, but to win the game you must score. Their FW could not do this time but may be in the next outings.

Viewer Rating: **

Good game to watch, Sweden is surely a better team and deserving win for them. The only a disappointment for spectators was single goal. But it was a good fight shown by Korean defenders and specially by their GK, at last it was a good game to watch.

Match Implication:

Ohh, seriously what a win for Sweden. This win gave them huge chance to make their position in next 16, after the stunning win by Mexico. They have to beat Mexico and it will not be very easy for them. No one can believe that after the first match of the group World champions and No.1 team will be in the bottom two.
