23rd May 2018 will undoubtedly be marked as one of the darkest days for sports fraternity around the globe as the invincible champion decided to sign off. Abraham Benjamin De Villiers (AB) from now will be mentioned as “former cricketer” and it leaves us all absolutely shattered. He is a player of international fame who was in South African team, Titans in domestic cricket and came to be known as one of the finest players of all times in the world. The moment he informed the world about his retirement over social media, it broke out as a major shock and went way too viral amongst the fans.
The 36 year old has various records to his credit and holds exceptional statistics due to which the name is etched to every tongue around the world. His amazing cricketing skills and supple physique earned him the title of “Mr 360”, as he displayed excellence not only with the bat but in fielding as well. At this point of time, when world was expecting to witness some more of his goodness, he decided to leave all international forms of cricket and the suspected reasons behind this action could be very few. Here are the World Records that are named to his credit
He made World’s Fastest ODI 50 (16 balls) playing against Pakistan and then he smashed World’s Fastest ODI 100 (31 balls) while playing against West Indies. AB scored World’s Fastest ODI 150 (64 balls) when he played against West Indies. He also holds record of Fastest Test century by a South African and Fastest Twenty20 International 50 by a South African.
You and I will really miss him in the green and golden uniform.
3 Possible Reasons for AB’s Unanticipated Exit:
#1 No Big Victories till Date with South Africa Team – Though, there may be any other reason behind the retirement but what seems to be the biggest is, there have been no BIG Victories for South Africa till date. Neither it has won WORLD CUP nor T20 WORLD CUP and not even the ICC Champions Trophy. Even being in stunning form, De Villiers could not witness any Big Win with his team and this factor might have taken a toll over his mind. South Africans have also been known as Chokers since they under performed in the Big events most of the time.
#2. Health concerns and Family- this could have been the other reason so as to why the Champion decided to wave good bye to his cricket career. As he even said in his statement “Tired”, the cricketing star might have felt exhausted and decided to be gentle on his mental as well as physical health. He may be willing to spend the rest of his life with family and friends.
Whatever may have been the reason for his sudden retirement, the entire cricket world can never have enough of this Superman and his absence will always be strongly felt. His heroics have not only amazed us on the field but also off it as he was the perfect Gentleman. The entire cricketing world can only wish him all the Luck and Fortune in times to come.
#3. Absence of Pay Parity amongst clubs and International Formats– It is too very clear that, there have been longstanding dearth of Pay Parity between clubs and international teams. Currently AB is a part of RCB of IPL. Pay at IPL’s have been lot more comparatively, also Cricket South Africa have been falling shorts of funds after the cancellation of Global T20 league. It was stated in a report that “Jonathan Trot played 6 years for England and made more than De Villiers could make in 12 years of his career”.
These may be few reasons according to my analysis… Please feel free to share your opinion…
